TIME magazine has recognized Tampa as one of the 2023 World’s Greatest Places, placing it alongside renowned destinations such as Giza, Egypt; Naples, Italy; and Jerusalem.

In its fifth year, TIME’s list highlights Tampa’s transformation, particularly the Water Street Tampa mixed-use development in the former industrial Channelside District. Time Magazine Journalist Terry Ward praised the city’s ambition to become a permanent fixture on travelers’ must-visit lists.

Ward attributed the recently completed first phase of the Water Street Tampa project to Tampa’s emergence on the list. The development includes the Tampa Edition, the city’s premier five-star hotel. The hotel, one of only five-star hotels in the US, features Michelin-starred chef John Fraser.

Supported by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, the development features top dining establishments such as Boulon Brasserie and The Pearl, lifestyle accommodations, and residences like the Roost Apartment Hotel. The district has also earned the distinction of being the world’s first WELL-certified City District, thanks to its commitment to sustainability and livability.

Ward emphasized Tampa’s downtown revival, attracting entrepreneurs and millennials to locations like Sparkman Wharf and Armature Works along the 2.6-mile Tampa Riverwalk. In addition, introducing a nonstop flight from Heathrow via Virgin Atlantic further increases Tampa’s appeal to international travelers.

TIME editors noted that the travel industry has rebounded in 2023, with significant changes in cost, sustainability, and authenticity shaping the future of travel. This year’s list of top destinations was curated from nominations by TIME’s international network of correspondents and contributors, focusing on new and thrilling experiences.
